Reel Lawn Mowers: A Green Alternative

Green Alternative

Reel Lawn Mowers: A Green Alternative
As summer approaches, we all get excited. Barbecues, baseball, fun at the beach, cutting the grass. What?!? Cutting the grass?

Love it or hate it, cutting the grass is a mandatory summer task. Personally, I always enjoyed cutting the grass at my home. But I hated the annual headaches associated with a gas powered mower.

Every year, you have the same pre-summer ritual: You break out the gas mower and go through the mandatory maintenance chores to ensure that it runs all summer.

First, you have to find the owner is manual so you know exactly what you have to do (which can actually be the hardest part of the job).

Then, it is off to the auto parts store for a new air cleaner, oil, spark plug and other components that need changing.

Then a quick stop at the gas station to fill up the five gallon gas tank so you don't run out of gas in the middle of the job; and with gas at over $3.50 a gallon, you've spent almost $20 on top of the cost of the engine parts.

So you've already invested about two hours of your time and around $30; and you haven't even cut a single blade of grass yet.

I had finally had enough.

Gas Lawn Mowers Versus Reel Mowers - Some Surprising Facts

I began my research into a green alternative to my gas powered mower when I came across these startling facts online.

Every weekend, 54 million Americans fire up the gas mower to cut their grass. You see it every weekend in your neighborhood; but probably don't think much about it.

Next time you do, think about this.

Those 54 million Americans will consume almost 800 million gallons of gasoline every year; just cutting their grass.

And what is worse? Those 54 million Americans will spill more than 17 million gallons of gas simply trying to refuel their gas mowers.

That is 17 million gallons of gas not even getting into the gas tank; it's just evaporating in the sun on the driveway or the floor of the garage.

Go Green With A Reel Mower

Why do you need the headaches associated with a gas powered lawn mower in the first place?

After all, you have the ability to keep your lawn maintained just as well (if not better) with a green solution that is maintenance free, has absolutely zero carbon footprint, and doesn't cost you a dime to use.

I'm talking about using a reel lawn mower, of course. And the advantages of a reel lawn mower versus a gas mower are numerous.

There is absolutely no maintenance with a reel mower. Since it has no engine, it has no maintenance. There is no spending money at the auto parts stores, and you never have the reel lawn mower cut out on you in the middle of the job because you have run out of gas.
It has a zero carbon footprint. No engine, no emissions. Granted, my lawn is not that big; and I only cut it once a week. But if 54 million other Americans are contributing to the greenhouse gas effect with their gas mowers, why should I add to it?
It is safe, quick and efficient. How many pulls does it take to start your mower? How long do you spend topping it off and checking the oil?
I can often have my entire front lawn completely mown with my reel lawn mower in the same amount of time it normally took me to just get the gas mower started.

I simply get out the reel mower, turn on my iPod, and start walking.

I have no noise, no fumes, no mess; and I don't have cut grass and twigs being discharged at my kids playing in the yard at 70 miles per hour.

Reel Mowers - They're Not Your Grandmother's Mower Any More

When was the last time you actually checked out the new reel lawn mowers? I remember cutting my grandmotherís lawn with her old reel mower.

It weighed a ton, had a wooden handle that insured palm blisters every time, and it didn't really cut the grass particularly well.

These new reel lawn mowers have taken advantage of technology; just like anything else. The biggest problems with the old reel lawn mowers have been solved.

They are lightweight, maneuverable, ergonomically designed, easy to push, and actually cut the grass just as well, if not better, than a gas mower.

The annual problem of blade sharpening has been solved as well.

Most of the new reel lawn mowers have taken advantage of this new 'stay sharp blade technology, and your reel lawn mower will now last two or three summers before you need to do the most basic blade sharpening.

And that doesn't take maybe half an hour to complete, either.

Reel Mowers Are Also Cost Effective

If you haven't given these reel mowers a look recently, you need to think about doing so.

You can find a great deal on the newest reel lawn mowers online with all the bells and whistles; usually at one half to one third the cost of a new gas mower.

And these new reel mowers are very efficient at one single thing. Cutting grass with very few (if any) headaches.

If you are looking for a green alternative that actually puts the fun back into a weekly summer chore (and gives you a quick workout at the same time), give these new reel lawn mowers a quick look.

What you'll discover may surprise you.
